Can a prospective student Google to the right online program for him or her? I spent a week trying to find out using search engines to look for colleges offering two popular online programs -- a criminal-justice degree and a master's degree in business administration. I wanted to see how quickly I could get to a person, whether I would encounter a slick salesperson or a helpful counselor, and whether I could get enough information to decide if the program was worth looking into further. I focused only on nonprofit colleges, since they are newer to online advertising than their for-profit counterparts. Here's how I fared.

The ‘millenials’ come of age

Chris Barnard's world is pretty typical for a 24-year-old single guy with a college diploma, a job and no landline.He earned a sociology degree two years ago and moved back in with his parents, working as a temp as he tried to figure out his next step in life.

One of those temp jobs became permanent, and Barnard now works in Washington, D.C., in the membership department of a trade association.

Online Recruiting Grows for College

Students considering attending the University of Missouri are logging onto the Internet and reading online journals featuring tales of sipping coffee at a local hangout and signing a lease on a new apartment. The blogs are more than sophomoric ramblings about college life.

They are one of several Web-based recruitment strategies colleges across the country are employing as they attempt to lure tech-savvy high-schoolers to their campuses.
